When you tune your guitar to standard, it labels your strings(1E, 2B, 3G, 4D, 5A, 6e). but my 4d, 5a,and 6e strings mess up. Ex: when i tune the 6e string, it goes from 7B(?) to 5A, but skips the 6e string.when i tune the 4D string, it goes from 3G to 5A. 5A string goes from 4D to 6E.

  1. I think I get it now. You're using a "guitar" tuner, not a chromatic one. The numbers kinda threw me, because those are used in singing to signify octaves, and the guitar doesn't hit the 6th or 7th octave. I think I got it.

What you're seeing is that as you tune up the guitar, you see the string move around from 3g to 4a to whatever as you tune up, and you don't see it fixate on the note you're aiming for, and this is confusing the heck out of you.

Okay, first off, some tuners can lock in at one note - a manual mode, I guess. If you have this capability, that would help.

Second, if you have the capability, there are online tuners. You might have to google them ("online guitar tuner" or some such) but they're free, and usually just need a microphone (many computers come with one) or with an electric, the ability to go from a 1/4" plug to the usually 1/8" mic in jack, or whatever your particular computer may have.

Third, you could try getting a better tuner. I use the Korg CA-30 I think it's called. It's a chromatic tuner, meaning that it shows whatever note you're playing, not what note you're aiming for. I have it so I can tune down or tune to odd tunings. I think it's a little over 20$, but a good tuner is soooo worth it!

You can try tuning again as well. This time keep tuning it up until you see it hit that 6e mark. You might just be stopping too soon.

  2. Are you saying that, as you tune one string, some others change their pitch?

If so, you have some seriousl problems with your guitar's neck, like it is coming loose from the instrument's body.  Some slight movement can be expected from a very old guitar, but, minor readjustments will quickly bring them all in tune.

But, I have a feeling that I am not understanding the question.  For instance, where did the SEVENTH string come from?
