Guitar guestion.?

I have for a while thought about taking guitar lessons. I have yet to purchase a guitar but am seriously thinking about it. I would love to play an electric guitar as opposed to an acoustical one because I love the sound you get from it. I know I wouldn't be making good music for probably years to come but I was wondering.............Should I start out with an acoustical guitar and take lessons, or would it be alright if I just bought some sort of cheap electric startup kit to take lessons with?

  1. It depends on your determination. I feel that I learned the fastest way- I spent almost a year on a terrible acoustic guitar that was nearly impossible to play, playing the same few simple exercises and songs I learned from a book. This builds up your strength and dexterity in your fingers. Then I bought an electric and a cheap amp, and took lessons for a couple of years. If you buy a guitar and start taking lessons, your teacher will just show you a scale, a couple of chords, and maybe some other exercises that you could learn from a book, then practice during the lesson, and tell you to practice. Until you get better, that is all you're going to do, so you should save your money.

Electrics are easier to play, but really, they are the same instrument, just like a keyboard is the same whether it's on a piano or a harpsichord or a synthesizer. It's normally easier to play higher notes on an electric, but some acoustics are fine to play. Many acoustics even have electronic elements to plug into an amp or PA system. In fact, my friend's acoustic plugged into my distortion pedal sounds better than my electric. You're going to have to experiment. But electrics are usually more convinient for lessons.

  2. i think you should get an acoustic guitar,,because it really sounds great.. (i know coz i have one!).. and,,one more thing, learning how to play the guitar is easy, you just need to be patient,,........................... By the way, i only learned how to play the guitar all by myself..everyday i practice and everyday i'm learning...i think you wouldn't need to take up lessons to learn

  3. Buy an Acoustic and HIRE A TEACHER (that's even more important than the guitar).

  4. You answered your own question.  Buy an inexpensive electric guitar with amp.  This way you will at least experience the difference in sounds.  Electric guitars are also easier to learn on because of the thinner neck.  Good luck.

  5. If you want to play electric then get an electric guitar. They are generally easier to play than acoustics. If you feel the need to take lessons then by all means seek out a qualified instructor. But teaching yourself is easy if you are motivated, there are lots and lots of beginner books and DVDs for both electric and acoustic guitars. Another thing to consider is renting an electric and an amp from your local music store. If you don't like it or want to change guitars it's not as expensive. Good Luck
