Question:

Guitar help?

I am just starting to learn guitar and am teaching myself. I've been playing violin for 6 years now so I have a little head start. I've found that I'm pretty good at picking up notes and stuff rather quickly due to a little experience in sight reading and both instruments being in the same clef. My biggest issue right now is strumming though. Being a violin player for so long, I'm so used to plucking the strings with my finger that I play the guitar more comfortably with my fingers, but the problem is that there are alot of songs I want to play that require a pick. The biggest problem I'm having with this is that when I switch from one string to another, I find my pick plucking the same string or some other error. The other problem is that it doesn't sound good when I strum, its uneven and I find the pick to get stuck at times with faster strumming. Can you guys give me some tips on strumming, and just overall using the pick and also help me solve the problems I'm having, Thanks alot!!

  1. when i began I started on using just my thumb, I found it was easy to tell where the strings were then.  Also when I use a pick I just let the tip of it touch the strings , so I didn't get it stuck between them.  I learned from a teacher and he keeped asking me if i had an injury to my hand, because I always strummed off, It took me a while just to strum evenly.  All I could realy tell you to do, is pratice, holding the pick and playing one string at a time, as you get better at telling "where they are" add 2 strings at a time and so forth .

  2. practice would really help you. but if your not really comfortable with the pick then just strum with your fingers. it could also be fun.

  3. I found a lot of helpful hints on youtube. I just found out that I've been picking wrong for several years. Just search for "how to hold a pick" or "picking guitar strings" You should find everything you need.
