This is kind of silly, but it needs an answer

i know the strings (acoustic) go from thick to thin, but my guitar teacher was helping me change the strings, so he only did 3 of them, 2, 4, and 6. so i am just changing the rest at the moment and it looks as if the 3rd string (d) will be thicker than the 4th (b) ? am i crazy or is this wrong?

  1. b is the fifth string.... from top to bottom it is eadgbe. thickest on top, thinnest on bottom. judging by the notes u wrote, not by string #, it should be thicker yes.

  2. I was wondering that just the other day,if the strings go from thick to thin then why is the third string thicker that the fourth...who knows why that is.

  3. Not crazy, They decrease in size from the base E string to the E treble in desending order. Happy new crisp sound, always a favorite time.

  4. A standard guitar tunes (from the lowest note to the highest) E, A, D, G, B, E.  Generally speaking, the thicker the string, the lower the note.  However, on an acoustic guitar, it is usual to have wound strings for the lower E, A, D, and unwound strings for the higher G, B, E.  The changes the vibrational properties on the strings, and it can happen that the G string is actually thicker than the D string.

There are other guitar tunings, but the principle is the same in each case.

(By the way, by "lower," I mean lower in pitch, not physically lower on the guitar face.)
