well i play an acoustic guitar and for some reason after about 4 months, the string sounds weird. it is the g string. the guitar tuner says its right but i know it isn't. it sounds sort of muffed. so i tuned by ear as best i can and still sounds weird. is my guitar string old and need changing. my string is like a spring like coil wrapped around the actual string. i think my strings are nylon but not sure. can i bring the broken string to a guitar shop and let them find the matching string since i know how to change it. how much do they usually cost in canada?

  1. Yes, you need to buy new strings. Strings wear fairly quickly and will not sound their best after a very short time. I change mine weekly or even twice a week - depending on how much I play and what strings I'm using at the time.

It really boils down to your preference. I have friends that will play until the string breaks. If the sound bothers you (it seems it does) then by all means change them. Most guitar shops will sell single strings. There is no need to buy an entire pack.

I don't know how much they cost in canada, but here in the states a single string replacement shouldn't cost you any more than a dollar or so.
