(Guitarist question) How does As I Lay Dying get their palm mutes to sound like this?

Ok so it's not As I Lay Dying, but it's the frontmans' sideproject band "Austrian Death Machine". It's the best example I can find.

I mean, are they using a different effect? Messing with the toggle switch? It's a different kind of sound, and I just can't nail it.

if you just both palm mute and stick your thumb ever so slightly over the pick while palm muting it makes a sound close to that
