I want to learn how to play guitar, but I want to do it on my own. Were there any great "teach yourself guitar" books that you used or heard of and do you have any tips for me? Thank you so much in advance!!!

  1. Search YouTube (and other video sites) for beginner guitar tutorials. Also guitartutee.com, etc.

Also, find some simple guitar tabs (tablatures) and practice, practice, practice. Guitar Tabs are a much, much easier way to write music -- most people figure Tabs out in a few minutes, compared against weeks for "staff notation." Again, for a quickie tutorial on reading Tabs search YouTube or Google Video or Splash or Megavideo or etc etc.

Also, your local library will loan videos / DVDs about teaching yourself guitar.

The most important thing to do is to play the guitar EVERY DAY for at least 30 minutes. EVERY DAY. Also, expect to play the same songs over and over and over. I've been playing for 20 years and when I decide to learn a new, complicated song I will play it at least 1,000 times by myself before anyone hears me play it in public.

    Good luck...

  2. With playing guitar you have to be devoted. It takes a long time to learn. Since your just starting I don't know if you have a guitar already or not but if you buy a guitar in a box...it will be a lot harder to play. Our neighbor quit because it hurt too much. They are cheaper but you get what you pay for. A guitar gets better as it's played so I recommend a used guitar in good condition. Around the $200 range. My dad bought a factory reject that had nothing wrong with it except for a tiny paint smudge on the back. It was originally about$600 but he got it for $320. Anyway, about learning. My dad  mostly taught me but for learning by your self I know youtube has quite a few how to start playing guitar videos. Theres a lot of online stuff that works just as good as the books. I couldn't tell you where though but a google search should be able to find you something. If you have any other questions just send me a message at: rockerx11@gmail.com

    Hope this helps!

  3. It's possible to buy a guitar starter packs that come with a Teach Yourself dvd. Take some time to ask at music stores if they have any for sale; the assistants are usually pretty helpful :]
