i know how to play, and i know how to sing. my problem is i haven't yet learned to do both at the same time. i asked my guitar teacher to teach me your body is a wonderland: john mayer, which is a relatively simple song, and again, i can play it and i can sing it. and if i don't learn right away it isn't going to keep me from growing as a musician, i just would like to know how other learned and tips to help learn.

my guitar teacher can't teach me because we have different playing styles and i can't quite follow him on this one.

btw, i am a twelve year old girl.

i've been playing for about 9 or 10 months

and im completely dedicated to my music and you will one day see me on stage preforming :)

  1. one thing that will help is to really pick up the rythem of the singing and the guitar and to be able to keep them both without loosing yourself

also learn both parts to the point where it is second nature to play them

i had the same trouble when trying to sing and play with the take over the breaks over by fall out boy, neither part is that hard but put together the  rythems and my head would be confused

i just took the incredibly monotonous time to learn to the point where i could play both half asleep and now it works great

i should only take a couple of hours before you see yourself taking on both parts

  2. All it takes is starting with a simple song that has an easy strum ("Time of Your Life") that you know all of the words to. That was the first song I started singing and playing to. Yeah, I messed up a few times but that's what practice is for.

Then just gradually move toward complicated strums and John Mayer type stuff (I'm so happy you like him!). His stuff is difficult to sing and play at the same time and should be saved for later on down the road. h**l, his stuff is hard to even PLAY (my teacher and I both know from slaving over a few of his songs).

Take it slow at first then build up from there. You'll get it!

  3. learn to play the song very well then start singing it and fine tuning. Start simple and build. What ever can be believed can be achieved. Never put your dreams on the back burner. Go for it, I'm looking forward to seeing you on stage.
