On the first day of the Group A Ranji Trophy encounter between Gujarat and Punjab, the former ended the day by posting 261 runs for nine, at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, Valsad.
Punjab, who chose to field, had a rough day as while they managed to prevent their opponents from reaching 300 runs, they could not bowl Gujarat out before the end of the day.
Gujarat openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Huzefa-Mohammed-Patel-c63657’s stumps with the batsman on 18 runs.
The second-wicket partnership between SB Gohel and MC Juneja was mind-boggling, as it launched a blatant onslaught, with the bowlers getting hammered all over the park.
The fielders were left helpless watching their top bowlers getting manhandled by the Gujarat batsmen.
Finally, after the batsmen had taken the score to 107, the partnership was brought to its end on the wicket of Juneja, who was dismissed by S Kaul, after bolstering a 42-run knock.
Gohel was then the next victim, as he lost his wicket to spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453, after moulding a knock of 41 runs. By this time, the batting side had managed to post 122 runs on the board.
Skipper PA Patel and Y http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Venugopal-Rao-c2752 then kept the team’s innings moving forward as the score reached 145, before Patel was neutralized by Harbhajan Singh after smacking 22 runs off 29 deliveries.
With Venugopal Rao trying desperately to forge some resistance, RH Bhatt lost his wicket after contributing only nine runs.
Things were heading south for the batting side, and they needed to halt the bowling onslaught in order to prevent their demise before the end of the opening day.
With Venugopal Rao gone for 13 and RV Dhurv faltering after belting seven runs, JB Karia and RB Kalaria staged a resounding comeback by forging an intimidating partnership. The two batsmen led their side towards 257 runs, before Karia fell after scoring 40.
This was then followed by the wicket of Kalaria, who also hit the showers after hammering a 40-run knock off 94 deliveries.
With KD Patel (2) and IH Chaudhary (1) still standing in the middle, Gujarat ended the day.
