Can Gujhiya/Gujiya - the special dessert for Holi be baked instead of deep fried?

Also, can I use phyllo dough to prepare the wrapper for it?

Can spring roll wrappers available in chinese grocery stores be used also?

  1. I don't think you can bake it. I have never seen a recipe like that. But you can try.

Phillo is good, but use a few sheets.

  2. They can be baked but they're not as tasty as the fried ones.

Brush the tops with a little melted butter or ghee and bake them on a foiled lined tray at 400 deg F or 6-8 minutes or until golden brown.   What I suggest:  trying baking a few and see if you like them.  In my experience, most people prefer the fried ones (obviously!).  What I do is shallow fry or pan fry them instead of deep frying but it's Holi --- you should enjoy!

Phyllo will work but it will be a totally different dessert, similar to a crispy baklava type.  You can use egg roll  or spring roll wrappers.  You can buy these nowadays in the produce section of any large supermarket.
