Gum Infection beyond the root?

Hi, I have had severe pain in one tooth for about 3 days now. I tried all pain killers and did no good, infact now the left part of my face is swollen. I went to the dentist this morning and he dint find anything wrong with the teeth itself. He took an XRAY and said that there was an infection way beyond the root itself (ie when I saw the xray there was this little white spot even after the tapering end of the teeth). He has given me antibiotics now and pain killers. . He also said that if it doesnt I will need to get a specialist as a dentist cannot fix this..Do you think it will get cured with just antibiotics? has anyone had anything like this before? Its just one tooth and even touching it hurts like HELLLLL.. Please help!

take the meds are prescribed..maybe try rinsing with warm salt water 3 times a day as well

It sounds as though you may have a periapical  abscess, if there was a darkening around the root tip of your tooth on the radiograph. Usually to treat this you would see an endodontist "root canal specialist" and have a root canal performed. You would then be advised, most likely, to return to your dentist to have the tooth crowned once the root canal is completed. Once a root canal is done the tooth is left more brittle, so it is crowned to protect it from breakage. Let your dentist know what is going on and they will make a recommendation for an endodontist that they usually work with. Sorry you are in pain - don't ignore it!

I've just posted a similar problem. He said i had infection and he couldn't see any immediate source of problem altho he did say root canal may be necessary in the future. He took an x-ray but it was very unclear (i think he should have done another one). Anyway i'm wondering if it is an abscess.

Try codeine phosphate for the pain. Worked on me.
