Question:

Gum is bleeding?

My wisdom teeth have been coming in as of late. One of them is about halfway in and is still partly covered by the gum, and I noticed after dinner that the gum is bleeding (only slightly) and the area is very sore.

I have a dentist's appointment in two weeks (Aug. 4). Is it fine to just wait until then and bring it up, or is this something I should get checked out soon?

  1. Bleeding and swollen gums manifest gum infection. Gum infection is primarily caused by bacteria living in the mouth. When bleeding and swollen gums are left untreated, gum infection can spread below the gum line affecting the gum tissues and bones that supports the teeth thus may result to periodontitis which is the advance stage of periodontal or gum disease, tooth loss may eventually occur.

Superior oral hygiene prevents the occurrence of bleeding and swollen gums which includes regular brushing and flossing, having a salt and warm water solution as a mouth rinse is also helpful. And dental visits are necessary for diagnosis and treatment of dental problems.

However for now you should let your dentist check your dental condition asap, delaying it gives the bacteria more time to spread and cause more trouble to your dental health.

  2. yes its normal

  3. Yes this is normal when wisdom teeth are erupting, this can be very painful and is called pericoronitis.

It should be fine to wait until your appointment, whilst your waiting you should use hot salty water, use it like a mouth wash and it should keep infection at bay. If you need to take any painkiller i would recommend ibuprofen, this works as an anti inflammatory to reduce swelling and takes away any pain.

    Hope this helps!
