Gun aiming?

I heard that when shooting the police suggest keeping both eyes open. Well I tried this on my .22 handgun and it didn't help. Am I not doing this right or did I miss hear something?

  1. It take's patience and practice, on most occasions you will be using your dominant eye [strongest, usually right handed people are dominant in the right eye, and left vice versa] to aim with, in turn while aiming with both eyes open, gives you a greater field of view and a wider peripheral view of your surroundings.

To find out your dominant, take your finger and point to say a wall outlet on the wall of your room, then hold that point, close your right eye, if you notice that your point is off by a foot or so then you will know your right eye is your dominant, but try with both eyes to be sure.

  2. both eyes are easier for some.

try aiming at 6:00, which means aim right below your target.

  3. You need to understand that police are normally shooting natural point of aim.  When you are in a very intense situation your fine motor skills stop working.  Things like taking careful aim are hard to do.  It is easier to use natural point of aim in these situations.  Also you will have a better chance of seeing movement to the sides.  If you talk to police that have been in this situation they will tell you if honest, that you focus your attention on the target.  Other things are not as clear.  Being able to use the sights is much harder too.  Many police also use the point and shoot method.  This is a good method to use for self defense shooting for civilians as well.  Also it is easier to shoot a moving target with both eyes open.  It takes practice to learn but once learned it is worth the time.

  4. shooting with both eyes open takes a bit of practice some people get double vison when they shoot this way when  this happens your target is the clearer of the two

  5. It's called point shooting and it's themost natural way to aim a handgun

You just have to trick yourself into thinking it's natural

It takes sometime to pick it up but once you do you won't be able to understand why it took anytime at all

  6. B.A.S.S. Breath,Aim,Sight,Shoot. Learn it. As for shooting with both eyes open, it's like pointing your finger at something. You can instinctively point you finger then you can learn to do it with a handgun.

  7. If you are right eye dominant, then there should be no difference in aiming with your right eye only (closing your left eye) or aiming with both eyes open.  Both will align the sights with the target according to your right eye.

I like to shoot with both eyes open to maintain my peripheral vision.

As far as accurate shooting is concerned, the most important factor is trigger control.  Master the surprise break, and things should fall into place.
