Guniea Pigs: Can you keep 2 males together?

I have previously owned guinea pigs before, so I know how to take care of them..

But all the guinea pigs were by them self..

I bought all 3 from Petsmart, they all lived for years..

I called Petsmart and Petco today asking about the pigs, here is what they told me

Petco- 2 guinea pigs, 1 male, 1 female, tricolored

Im guessing that they keep the pigs in separate tanks, or cages so they wont mate..

Petsmart- Alot of pigs, all male, different colors..

I dont know if they are in separate cages..

I dont think so. They are probably in the same large Tank/Cage..

Should I buy 2 males from petsmart?

  1. You can get the male and the female as long as you get one or both neutered.

Males can be kept together especially if introduced when young.  Do not worry about a little agression - it is normal, unless blood is drawn there is nothing to worry about.  Just never introduce a female even if they are neutered as they will fight over her!

  2. Two males should do fine together as long as they get along and watch for any fighting. However, I would never get a Guinea Pig from Pet smart or Pet co, they get them from huge factory like places where they constantly breed sick and injured animals. A majority of the animals at pet stores are sickly and never handled, therefore they aren't used to human contact and will be very nervous or even vicious. Your best bet is to get a Guinea Pig from the SPCA they are well handled, cheaper, and healthy. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

  3. Two males do fine together, they have no more problems then any other guinea pigs, although, if they are not raised together, they will need to get used to each other like any animals. Male guinea pigs do not fight all the time like some people think. If that is your only option besides getting a guinea pig by itself, i would do it.

  4. I grew up with guinea pigs too.  Yes, if you put a female and male together, they will mate and you'll soon have a litter.

It is ok to put two males together, as GP's are very social.  What I have done is, put them on the floor and let them get aquanted to see how they get along and if there is not tension or termoil, then your ok.

Be sure to have a big enough cage for them both though because they will grow bigger.

  5. Yes, you should. But be aware, they might fight.
