Gunshot victim Tim Green unable to speak
According to a recent report by ESPN.com, University of Southern Mississippi head coach Larry Fedora has stated that linebacker Tim Green is unable to speak as a result of gunshot wounds that he sustained on Saturday night. Fedora relayed the information
to the media on Monday 15 November as he addressed them during his weekly news conference.
Green, along with defensive end Deddrick Jones and fellow linebacker Martez Smith, was one of three Southern Mississippi football players that were shot this past weekend following the team’s 31-21 victory over the University of Central Florida Knights. Fedora
stated that Green has not been able to talk since the incident occurred, and has been writing notes to get his thoughts across.
The head coach would not comment on the extent of any of the players’ injuries, but did convey their remorse at bringing such a negative light to their program. “They felt like they let the team down,” Fedora said Monday.
Following the Golden Eagles’ victory in Orlando, the team returned back to their Hattiesburg, Mississippi, campus. Later that night, a group of about eight to 10 Southern Miss players then visited a local nightclub. Hattiesburg police officials say that a fight
that initially started inside the club eventually made its way into the parking lot, where the altercation occurred. According to the report, none of the players were armed.
Although Fedora insisted that his players are not bound by a Saturday night curfew following games, the head coach has since put a team-wide banishment on nightclubs. “We constantly talk about making good decisions with our football team,” he said. “These are
18, 19, 20-year-old kids. Unless you are that age you probably do not think the same way they do. I know I don’t.”
“Making decisions is part of the growing process and coming from a young man to a full-grown man,” Fedora continued. “You have to make decisions on your own and understand that there are consequences to every decision you make. We talk about that all the time.
Kids are going to make mistakes and they are going to pay the consequences for those mistakes and they move on and learn from them and grow. That is how they become a full-grown man.”
