Guppies Breeding!?!?!

I got 5 new fish! I got 2 guppies, a male a female. I have never owned fish that breed before. The female was already pregnant when we bought her from the pet store. In the other tank for the parents does it need to be ariated and all that stuff? We don't have another ariater! How much does the kit cost? We have a 5 gallon tank but will soon be getting a 10 gallon. Any tips?

  1. Guppies breed like crazy! I had some before i started out with 3 and ended up with nearly fifty. If you are looking for something to keep the babies in untill they get older so they aren't eaten I would just reccomend going to a pet store and buying the cheapest guppy breeder they have. Normally it's just a small cage that floats around the top of the tank with small haoles so the fish can't get out until you free them. This uses the water from your tank so if you have the water codition for the fish then you will not need to buy anything beside the guppy breder witch are normally priced between 5-15 dallors.

  2. I have a guppy fry tank and a molly ,platy, and swordtail fry tank and they have no ariators. I use a regular 10 gallon tank with heater , filter, decor, etc. and they do just great. One of my smaller fry tanks (5 gallon) has a whisper filter which does create a bubbling effect if that`s what you are looking for. It cost me $ 9.99 at Walmart. A breeding net only costs $ 3.99 at Walmart and that , too works great for nwborn fry to grow in. Just remember to sperate the mother before she has the fry to a breeding net/seperate tank with plenty of plants for the fry to hide in or the other adult fish will eat up the fry.

  3. You really don't need to do anything to get guppies to breed.  They just will.  If you have a filter, that will probably provide plenty of oxygen in the water without the need for more aeration.  You should have 2 females for each guppy male or the male will pester the female to death trying to mate with her (literally!).  Males can chase a female guppy around so much wanting to mate when there's only 1 of each that she gets too stressed out and can get sick and die from all the unwanted attention.  At least when there's 2 females for each male the females can occasionally get a break when the male is off chasing the other female.  Guppies give birth to live fry and may eat them right after they are born, so make sure that there are lots of places for the fry to hide.  Small leaved plants and floating plants are best.  Either live or fake, it doesn't really matter as long as there are enough of them that they can keep out of sight of their hungry parents.  It also helps to keep the adult fish well fed on high protein foods when you think the female is about to drop her fry.  Some good high protein foods are bloodworms, tubifex worms, brine shrimp or daphnia.  Feed very small amounts but fairly often.  Guppies will not eat themselves to death.  They will stop eating when they are full.  Just make sure that uneaten food is removed and doesn't sink to the bottom and foul the tank water.
