Question:

Guppies gills are red?

I have 4 guppies and all of their gills are red and they were not red before. I looked on the internet and it said i needed to turn my air up in the tank. I did that last night and the red went away, but it back again.

Any suggestions to what this is?

  1. First check your ammonia and nitrite levels and make sure they're at 0 ppm.

It could also be a parasite infection, like ich or gill flukes-which you won't see, can only tell for sure by doing a gill scraping and looking under a microscope.  If the water quality checks out ok, or if there's nitrites present, try adding some aquarium salt-1 tablespoon per 5 US gallons, dissolve first in a bowl with some dechlorinated water, and see if that helps.
