Question:

Guppy won't give birth?

I have a female fancy guppy that is pregnant. Her gravid spot is nearly black and she looks like she's swallowed a pea(her belly is HUGE)

Unfortunately she was pregnant when I bought her so I'm not sure how long its been. Is there anything I can do to stimulate the birthing process or should I just wait?

This is my first time breeding guppies so any and all help is welcome!

  1. my daughters guppies were pregnant for ages and ages, there is no need to worry or to do anything,i think they just release the babies  whenthey feel the time and conditions are right,we now have a tank swarming with guppies as the babies soon start reproducing, they are worse than mice

  2. I suggest that when your female does give birth, that you move the female mum into a separate tank so that she doesn't eat all the fry.

You will find that your guppy will be nearly ready to give birth if she is:

    >Dwelling on the bottom

    >Hanging around the top of the tank

    >Hovering near plants (or in them)

    >Hanging around the filter (if you have a internal one)

    >Hovering above the heater

If you can see the eyes of fish through the gravid spot, then this signifies that she is almost ready to give birth.

You should just wait, it will take as long as it takes for her to give birth.

JUST REMEMBER... when she gives birth, move her into a separate tank as soon as possible.  The guppy will secrete a hormone which will stop her from being hungry for about 12 hours... after that, your fry are at risk of being eaten if the female guppy is hungry.

    Hope That helps =]

  3. you have 2 choices

    1)leave her be

    2) higher the temp to 28-29C -82-84F for couple of hours increasing the temp with make them either want to release their babies or the other fish to mate but most of the time fish wont give birth till they are comfortable and not stressed at all hope this helps u out and good luck

  4. Keep things calm and quiet for her. She will have the fry when she is ready. The more stress the larger the chance she will abort the fry. Pregnancy is around 4 weeks, give or take a few days. Be sure there are lots of hiding places for the fry. Any other fish (including the mom) will eat the fry-
