Gus Kenworthy claims victory in fourth annual Dumont Cup – Freeskiing News
America’s professional freeskier Gus Kenworthy walked away with top honours from the latest edition of Dumont Cup that went down at Sunday River in Maine, America, on Saturday, March 24.
His fellow countrymen Nick Goepper and Joss Christensen finished in second and third place respectively, rounding out the podium.
With sun shining brightly on the final day of fourth annual Dumont Cup, there was not a lot of snow on offer on the East Coast. However, the park crew did a great job in getting the slopestyle course in shape for the Final.
With a handful of world class surfers competing for top honours on Saturday, the crowd anticipated a heavy dose of thrilling action.
Giving fans their money’s worth, the Colorado-based Kenworthy put on a phenomenal performance to steal the show. The 20-year-old freeskier strung together a number of technical tricks during his best run. The run featured a k-fed on the down flat down rail,
a 360 switch up 270 out on the up gap flat rail, a right 900 lead tail on the first jump, switch double rodeo 900 Japan on the second jump and a double cork 1260 mute on the final jump.
The spectacular run compelled the judges to give it a score of 96.00, putting Kenworthy in the lead that held up until the end to claim victory.
“I didn't come into the event with any big expectations, I just wanted to have fun in the sun with my friends,” Kenworthy said during his post-Final interview. “It was super sunny and the course was sick. I'm stoked to walk away on top.”
Goepper, the defending event champion, was forced to settle for runner-up position this year after scoring a 94.00 off his best run that featured various variations of doubles on the jumps section of the course.
The 18-year-old Christensen landed on podium for the third time in Dumont Cup history, with the latest podium coming through his 89.00-point run that included a double cork 1260 and a switch right 1260 on the jumps.
“It's a great event, and it's only getting better,” Christensen said. “Hopefully next year I will finally be in that top spot, but I couldn't be happier for Gus and Nick.”
The fourth annual Dumont Cup turned out to be an action-packed affair, delivering a number of memorable performances and showcasing the level of progression in freeskiing.
