Gus Pugliese, striking coach for Dan Henderson, believes his fighter should have headlined UFC 157 next year against Lyoto Machida. Like many others in the UFC, Pugliese believes Ronda Rousey vs. Liz Camouche should not have been the main event, asserting
that Rousey still needs to prove her mettle under UFC’s banner, regardless of her experience under Strikeforce banner.
“His resume is second to none, moreover, he is fighting a former champion, Lyoto Machida. Now why aren't they main event? Is Ronda a better market value?” said Pugliese, who believes a fight between Machida and Henderson would have been more entertaining
for the fans.
“I don't know, but her fight could be quick as usual and we could be missing another historic 5 rds fight between 2 legends and possible hall of famers. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve to headline an UFC event, but certainly not this one,” he added.
Rousey is known for finishing her opponents in the first round with her signature armbar submission. Even though it is an impressive feat for her to defeat her opponents in the very first round, Pugliese believes it is too less to entertain fans.
For now, Pugliese is now pleased with the idea of allowing Rousey headline UFC 157. According to him, she should have been brought in the organisation as the number one contender and she should have competed for the title. Since Rousey already is UFC’s bantamweight
wmma titlist, she will be defending it against Camouche, which to many is not very pleasing.
According to Pugliese, Machida and Henderson have given their blood and soul to the sport and they deserve headlining events, instead of someone who has just joined the organisation.
Unfortunately, whatever Pugliese or others have to say, it would not make a difference to the card. Dana White already promised fans wmma in 2013 and he is giving it to them. If anyone has a problem with White’s decision, they can only raise their concern
but they surely will not get anything in return, as it has happened in the future. Probably, Pugliese needs to wait a bit for his fighter to get the shot.
