Gustavo Fernandes and Shaun Cansdell win their heats: First round of Super Surf International – Part 10
The Super Surf Pro continued with the 19th and 20th heat of the round of 96 on Wednesday, June 1st, at the beach-break of Praia da Vila in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
The conditions were not ideal for surfing as the strong offshore winds made it really challenging for the surfers to ride the four-to-six foot waves. However, the surfing fans still expected some intense and exciting contests to take place, considering the
talent-pool that made up the competition field.
The 19th heat of the first round pitted Brazilian’s Gustavo Fernandes against Puerto Rico’s Dylan Graves, Australia’s Dion Atkinson and Japan’s Masatoshi Ohno.
Fernandes took the lead early in the heat, getting a 7.00 off his first wave. He soon followed it up with a 5.30 point wave to finish with a heat total of 12.30 points.
Puerto Rican Graves managed to come up with a couple of decent waves as well, but they were not good enough to get him ahead of his Brazilian rival. Both his best waves came in the middle stages of the heat, earning him 5.07 and 6.70 points respectively.
Finishing with 11.77 points, he was forced to surrender victory to Fernandes and settle for a runner-up place. They both stand qualified for the second stage of the competition.
Atkinson was unfortunate to miss out on a place in the next round by just 0.07 points. He finished in third place, while Ohno rounded out the fourth place with 10.57 points. Both of them have been eliminated from the Super Surf International.
Australia’s Shaun Cansdell was up against three Brazilians, Luel Felipe, Pedro Henrique and Fabio Carvalho in the 20th heat.
Cansdell instantaneously clinched the lead with by earning himself 7.33 points from his first wave. He immediately followed it up with a 6.70-point wave to finish the heat with a two-wave total of 14.03 point.  The score remained unbeatable and eventually
carried him off to victory, along with confirming a place for him in the next round.
Felipe remained the most impressive among his countrymen, securing 5.33 points off his first wave early in the heat and later locking a wave to earn 8.33 points. He finished in second position, qualifying for the round of 48.
Henrique and Carvalho rounded out the third and fourth positions with 10.57 and 8.83 points respectively. Both of them are no longer in contention for the event title.
