Guy Forget and Henri Leconte advance to final of the Men’s Legends over 45 – French Open 2011
French team of Guy Forget and Henri Leconte eased past Romanian Spanish pair of Ilie Nastase and Emilio Sanchez in straight sets at Men’s Legends over 45 – Roland Garros, a major clay court event held in Paris, France. The Frenchmen
registered a 6-3, 6-2 win at their home soil to advance into the final on Thursday.
The veterans, Forget and Leconte, re-created their old magic to triumph over the Romanian Spanish team in straight sets in under an hour. The local legends outshined in every department of tennis to book a final spot at Stade Roland
Garros.
With the help from the supportive crowds, the Frenchmen thundered at Court Suzanne Lenglen and held their opening serve plausibly. They then kept their winning ways to reel off remaining serves with massive forehands and backhands
from their arsenal of skills. Forget and Leconte faced zero breakpoint and converted one out of three breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to seal the opener with a 6-3 score line in twenty-four minutes. They also produced a higher first serve share
of 54 percent as compared to Nastase and Sanchez’s 45 percent and registered a spectacular 92 percent win on it.
The French duo perfected their co-ordination in the final set and despite clobbering a lower first serve share, they earned an amazing 83 percent win on it to eventually clinch the set with a 6-2 win. Forget and Leconte netted
28 points to Romanian – Spaniard team’s 20 to help pocket the set easily.
The winning pair rallied past Iranian Australian tandem of Mansour Bhrami and Mark Woodforde in a three set thriller in first round robin. They saved one out of two breakpoints conceded and converted three out of six breakpoint
opportunities to their advantage to bag the match with a 7-6(5), 6-2 10-8 victory. The Frenchmen produced a higher first serve share of 79 percent as opposed to their rivals’ 64 percent and earned an awesome 75 percent win on it and eventually sealed the deal
in 64 minutes.
After this victory, Forget and Leconte got 2-0 lead to advance into the final from Group A.
On the other hand in Group B, Australian duo of Pat Cash and Peter McNamara won the only match they played. They bested the Swedes, Mikael Pernfors and Mats Wilander by 6-2, 6-3 score line.
Former champions, Ecuadorian Andres Gomez and American John McEnroe, have yet to play a match from this group and could pose a threat to remaining two teams.
