A guy just came and was talking about being with a gas company program. He asked for our phone number and name...is this guy legit? Should I have not opened the door?

  1. ya, hate to break it to you, but you shouldn't have given him that info. always ask to see an official id, and read it, don't just let them flash it. the gas company would already have that info on record. so i don't know who you gave the info to, but i'd keep an eye out for him, and maybe contact the police or at least the neighborhood watch.

  2. The gas company knows your name and your phone number.

This guy was someone else.     I hope you did not give him any information.

  3. They never send anyone  to your door. They have all that info already. Don't open the door to strangers.

  4. Some company representing the gas company called my house 5 times in 2 days trying to save me .03 cents per unit because our gas company raised their rates .21 cents per unit.

The lady said we wouldn't be switching our gas company or anything like that and she just needed to confirm who I was to do so and said she would hold while I got my gas bill.

I said to her "I am getting my gas bill so you can read me YOUR information to verify its me or ...?"

She said "No, why would I have your information already?"

I told her "well every company tells you they will never contact you and ask for your information and I feel she should already have it."

She said "I would feel uncomfortable if the person on the phone already had that information. If I already had the information then why would I need to contact you.  Do you know what I mean?"

I said "What is your name and phone number and I will call you back."

She said "This is an outbound only call center so we will just have to call you back."

Which they did 4 more times and I finally answered the 4th and told them not to contact me again.  She said "So you don't want to save money? That doesn't make sense to me!" and I told her "No, I hate saving money.  Don't call me again!" and hung up the phone.

So there is definitely something fishy going on there.  I wouldn't give out my personal info to anyone now for anything.  If they don't have it then they aren't getting it.

    Good luck.
