Guy thinking of joining the Canadian Reserves when I turn 16...Should I?

My brother is joining the Reserves this year, and plans to join the army once he is done university. So lately he's been telling me "Join the reserves in the summer when you turn 16" and has been pressuring me a lot to join recently. Well I had a talk to him about it, and I see it being kind of a cool opportunity for me and it would definitely help in the future for any job i would want to get. But here's the kicker.

First off, I'm fat (not obese fat, but overweight fat). I'm pretty sure if I tried, I could pass any physical requirements the reserves had, but I think this might cause problems for me when doing activities in the summer at the reserve base, i don't want to be the fat kid that always lags behind and slows his entire team down. Not to mention I would probably be one of the fat kids in my entire division. I'm also kinda scared of not making any friends, because I'm more of an intellectual type, rather than a "My muscles are bigger than yours, LETS FIGHT!" type.

2. I hate to admit it.....but I'm kinda scared of s******g up. I just don't know what I could do well? I could go in for my infantry but I just think i'd end up doing something stupid and everyone in the base would hate me or I would s***w up something and my brothers reputation would be put at stake.

I don't know, i'm just extremely iffy on this entire thing, but I feel like if i don't join i would let my brother down and I would be missing a pretty huge opportunity and I like the added pay benefits :P

What do you guys think? Should I do it? Or should I hold off?

  1. First off, I wouldn't be too concerned about being the fat kid that can't keep up.  That's why every military, irregardless the country, has physical conditioning and training.  They don't expect you to be perfect on day 1.  They'll teach you your job and give you all the tools you need to do it well.

  2. Dude...join the coast guard...we're on the brink of a major war...if you are ready emotionally then go for it!  I'm glad you're interested in serving your country though...good for you man!
