Guyana Star Dweej becomes Shivmangal’s second attempt at the Belmont Stakes
Shivmangal Racing Stable’s 3-year-old colt, Guyana Star Dweej, is going to the Belmont Stakes to win a race of such magnitude for his trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal. Guyana Star Dweej has started majorly in New York, with a single start at Belmont Park and the rest at the Aqueduct racetrack.
He is familiar to the track, as he finished second to, Unstoppable U, in a mile long allowance/optional claimer on 27 April, 2012, as Forward March finished third.
Bred in Kentucky by Leroy S. Close and Lavin Bloodstock, Guyana Star Dweej reacquainted himself to the track when he got out on the morning of 7 June, 2012, with the rest of the Belmont Stakes contenders along with Grade 3 winner, Shkspeare Shaliyah.
Both stable mates worked over the Big Sandy and in company galloped over the 1 ½ mile track, and retiring to the designated stakes barn, exclusive for the Belmont Stakes contenders.
“The exercise rider went a little slower than I wanted him to go, but I’m pleased with the way he went,” owner-trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal said. “He is more competitive with company, but tomorrow I’m going to relax him by himself. He won’t do much.”
Doodnauth Shivmangal has experienced running in the Belmont Stakes before – a painful experience nonetheless.
Back in 2011, Shivmangal has Isn’t He Perfect entered in the Belmont Stakes, and the colt had a troubled trip on a sloppy Belmont track, and finished last of 12.
“I will be very, very happy and proud to do that, and I think I have a shot of doing it,” Shivmangal said. “I did not go in because I just want to go in the Belmont. Winning a race of this magnitude would be great for me. It would be huge, and something that I’m looking forward to. Of course, it would make anybody very happy and excited.”
The son of Eddington, out of Pine Bluff mare Special Feeling, Guyana Star Dweej made seven long attempts at breaking his maiden, but on the eighth asking he was lucky to finish on top at about a mile at Aqueduct racetrack.
