Guyana Star Dweej confirmed to run in the Belmont Stakes after a half mile work
Shivmangal Racing Stable’s Guyana Star Dweej is a seasoned campaigner as a 3-year-old colt, but unfortunately doesn’t have much to show as credentials, as he has been dwelling in maiden races in 2011 and a good part of 2012, but he finally made it after
seven attempts, and in his eighth attempt he downed his maiden special weight race at Aqueduct racetrack, where he had run in 8 of his 9 career starts.
Doodnauth Shivmangal trained, Guyana Star Dweej arrived at Belmont Park on 27 April, 2012, to participate in a mile long allowance/optional claimer, but he was second best to another Belmont Stakes hopeful, Unstoppable U, who downed 1 mile in 1 minute and
37.23 seconds.
Since then, Guyana Star Dweej has stayed at Belmont Park, and will be looking to run over the marathon distance of 1 ½ miles of the Belmont Stakes, where he joins a queue dedicated to stop I’ll Have Another in his tracks from winning the Triple Crown on
9 June, 2012.
The Eddington colt’s confirmation to run in the Belmont Stakes came when Doodnauth Shivmangal monitored the colt turn in half mile ahead of the “Test of the Champion.”
“Guyana Star is in the Belmont,” Shivmangal said. “I was very pleased with him yesterday morning, but I am more pleased today. We were able to beat the weather, and he did what he needed to do. I think Guyana Star is back on the straight path again.”
Bred in Kentucky by Leroy S. Close and Lavin Bloodstock, Guyana Star Dweej coupled with Hall of Fame jockey, Kent Desormeaux, covered the quarter mile distance in 22.76 seconds and then went on to top half mile in 49.06 seconds.
Guyana Star Dweej worked in company with, Shkspeare Shaliyah, who previously won the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes, as Guyana Star Dweej’s work came to an end with a five furlong gallop in 1 minute and 2.39 seconds.
“Kent said he was very relaxed and went very easy,” Shivmangal said. “He’s a nice horse. Nothing bothers him.”
Desormeaux should be the obvious choice to ride Guyana Star Dweej in the toughest race of the Triple Crown.
