Guyana Star Dweej worked four furlongs before getting pulled up ahead of the Belmont Stakes
Shivmangal Racing Stable’s 3-year-old colt, Guyana Star Dweej, broke his maiden after several attempts through the course of two seasons, and now he is pointed at the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on 9 June, 2012.
Bred in Kentucky by Leroy S. Close and Lavin Bloodstock, Guyana Star Dweej has a 30 May, 2012 workout ahead of the Belmont Stakes. The Eddington colt was planned to go longer than five furlongs, but jockey Eddie Castro pulled the colt up for reasons unknown.
Though, Guyana Star Dweej was credited for a four furlong work that he breezed on 50.03 seconds, as the colt is on a tentative work tab, which indicates that he will work for the second time on either the 6th or the 7th of June, couple of days before the “Test of the Champion.”
That work will play a major role in Guyana Star Dweej’s participation in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes said owner/trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal.
“For some reason, the jockey didn’t let him go around the turn,” said Shivmangal. “We planned to go five-eighths, but we didn’t get the full work in. But it’s OK. He’s not a work horse. He loafs in the morning, but in the afternoon he’s a different horse. He came back, we scoped him, he scoped fine.”
“I want him to do it fast,” said Shivmangal. “I’ll put him in company, and from there I’ll make my final decision. I would love to run him in the Belmont.”
Out of mare Special Feeling, Guyana Star Dweej tried breaking his maiden seven times in a span of two seasons, as he started off on 26 November, 2011, at Aqueduct racetrack and stayed there with eight starts in a row to break his maiden on 7 April, 2012.
Sired by Pine Bluff, Guyana Star Dweej, stormed past his opponents to down the 1 mile long distance over at Aqueduct’s main dirt track to win it in 1 minute and 37.50 seconds.
The colt next started at Belmont Park in a 1 mile long allowance/optional claimer, and finished second to winner, Unstoppable U, on 27 April, 2012.
