Guyana defeat Combined Campuses and Colleges by 4 wickets in Caribbean T20
A combined effort from Lennox Cush and Jonathon Foo handed Guyana a second consecutive in the Caribbean T20 tournament at Kensington Oval, Barbados. Chasing a par-for-the-course 20 over total of 143 set by Combined Campuses and Colleges, Guyana at one stage was struggling at 90 for 5, but Jonathon Foo’s cameo took Guyana home with four balls to spare.
Earlier, the Combined Campuses and Colleges rode on the innings of only three batsmen - Floyd Reifer (49 off 31), Miles Bascombe (36 off 29) and Nekoli Parris (17 off 22) – to reach the competitive but gettable 142 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. Rest of the batsmen could not enter the double figures even. An aggressive bowling attack led by Jonathon Cush did not let the opposition batting line up get charged at the crease.
In overcast conditions, Guyana after winning the toss decided to field first. However, the captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, in the start, was made to regret that decision by Miles Bascombe as the opener mauled Cush for 15 runs in an over including a square leg six. But the regret was short-lived as Bascombe’s opening partner Romel Currency, struggling at the other end, departed in the sixth over slashing Lennox Cush to Jonathon Foo. Currency scored 8 runs from 15 deliveries. An over later the fluent Bascombe also followed Currency as he nicked Devendra Bishoo to Lennox Cush. Bascombe scored 36 runs from 29 balls. His pugnacious 36 included three boundaries and two sixes as well.
Bascombe’s dismissal brought Floyd Reifer to the crease and in partnership with Nekoli Parris, the duo played some well-timed innovative shots to drag Combined Campuses and Colleges towards a reasonable score.
The partnership was worth 44 when Bishoo struck back to break it with a beautiful delivery, having http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nekoli-Parris-c79204 caught by Travis Dowlin. Parris with the help of a lone boundary scored 17 runs of 22 balls. Despite Parris’s departure, fluent Reifer kept his assault on taking Combined Campuses and Colleges to 122-4 from 95 for 4. The leg injury made it harder for Reifer to run between the wickets so he started scoring in boundaries rather than going for singles and doubles. On the first ball of the 18th over, Reifer got a run out on a direct hit from Ramnaresh Sarwan, leaving the side with 123 for 5 on the board.
The side could get only 19 runs from the last three overs, losing four wickets finishing the 20 overs innings at 142 for 9. Six of the batsmen from Combined Campuses and Colleges failed to enter double figures.
Though the Guyana bowlers were aggressive against the opponent’s batting line-up, the aggressiveness was mainly at the cost of their line and length as the final tally of extras included seven wide balls. Lennox Cush was the most successful bowler taking four wickets, followed by Bishoo and Barnwell with 2 wickets each. Esuan Crandon was the most expensive conceding runs at an economy of 9 runs per over in his four over spell.
Guyana’s chase got a shoddy start as the opener Travis Dowlin lost his wicket in the opening over with 2 on the board. Then captain Ramnaresh Sarwan came to the crease and in partnership with Dowlin’s opening partner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Narsingh-Deonarine-c78681, who left in the following over of Sarwan’s dismissal. Soon the side was struggling at 90 for 5. Once again it was Foo who took the initiative, scoring a whirlwind 23 off just 17 balls, taking the side to 143 for six in the last over with four balls to spare.
