Guyana overpower Trinidad & Tobago by 4 runs in the Caribbean Twenty20 semifinal
The adoring crowd at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad, was left heartbroken as the tournaments favourites Trinidad and Tobago were kicked out of the Caribbean T20 by Guyana in the nerve-jangling first semifinal on 30th July. In reply to Guyana’s 175 for 7, the whole team of Trinidad and Tobago was out on the penultimate ball with five more runs required to win. Trinidad and Tobago lost four wickets off the last six balls for only nine runs.
In a match that was restricted to 19 overs due to delayed start, at the end of the 16th over, it was Guyana’s game as Trinidad and Tobago were 57 runs away from the target – the run rate exceeding 19 per over. However, Dwayne Bravo’s psychedelic knock of 55 from 20 balls left Guyana praying for luck in the final moments of the game. Thanks to Royston Crandon’s three-wicket haul in the final over, Guyana bagged a tense four runs victory in the second last ball of the match.
On the overcast day, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sewnarine-Chattergoon-c89221 posted 51 runs for the opening stand from the Powerplay overs. Chattergoon departed in the seventh over, nicking Lendl Simmons to the wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin. He scored 36 runs from 24 deliveries, including four boundaries and two lofty sixes.
Chattergoon’s dismissal brought Esuan Crandon to the crease, and in partnership with Travis Dowlin, the duo played a succession of beautifully-timed shots to drag Guyana towards an imposing score. Both added more than seventy runs to the scorecard for the second wicket partnership, taking the visitors to 126 for 1 from 51 for 1. The partnership was worth 76 when Dwayne Bravo broke it in the 15th over, having Dowlin caught by Sherwin Ganga at deep cover. Dowlin tried to pull Bravo’s ball for his fifth six, as he came down the track hitting the ball in the air to the deep cover, but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sherwin-Ganga-c90004 took a very good catch near the boundary line, sending the fluent opener back to the pavilion. Dowlin scored 59 runs off 39 balls plundering two boundaries and four muscular sixes.
In the next over, Esuan Crandon followed Dowlin, when a swinging delivery from Pollard got the edge and William Perkins, diving across and forward, took a brilliant catch leaving Guyana 132 for 3 on the board. Crandon’s 30 runs from as many balls contained two boundaries and a six. Pollard struck back in the 18th over, taking three wickets off the same over as he bowled Jonathan Foo over, while Barnwell mistimed a Pollard delivery to Simmons two balls later. Royston Crandon was the third prey of Pollard in the 18th over, when he gave an edge to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Denesh-Ramdin-c53549 on the last ball of Pollard’s spell. Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan was run out by Dwayne Bravo at the bowlers’ end. Sarwan’s six runs off 3 balls came through the lofty six that he plundered to Bravo over the long off. At the end, off the allotted 19 overs, Guyana set up a competitive total of 175 runs losing seven wickets. Kieron Pollard remained the most successful bowler from the hosts’ side, as he took 4 wickets conceding 31 runs.
In reply, the half centuries from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Barath-c42094 (54) and Dwayne Bravo (55) were not enough to overcome the capitulation of the rest of the batting line-up, as seven of the Trinidad and Tobago batters went back to the pavilion without entering double figures. Bravo’s late hitting went in vain as the hosts lost three wickets in the final over of the game. Guyana bundled the hosts out for 171 in 18.5 overs, making it through to the final of the Caribbean T20 tournament.
