Guyana trounces Bermuda 6-0 in 2011 Pan American Challenge Cup – Hockey Update
Chantelle Fernandes, the skipper of the Women’s hockey team of Guyana scored three times and had an assist, as Guyana marked a convincing 6-0 win over Bermuda in the third fixture of the Pan American Challenge Cup being held at the Deodoro Hockey Complex
in Rio de Janeiro on August 3.
The Women’s hockey squad of Guyana opened the tournament with an impressive start and marked two victories while drawing a solitary game out of first three encounters. On the other side, Bermuda lost all the three games they played thus far against Guyana,
Uruguay and the host Brazil.
Both teams landed onto the field in quite a professional way as Guyana’s line-up has had superiority over the opponent Bermuda owing to their previous wins in the tournament. Guyana established their dominance over the field from the very starting minutes
and obtained three goals in the first period. They continued their action in the second set of play and received three more notches to edge past the Bermuda team by six impressive goals.
The main reason behind the heavy margin of victory for Guyana was their passing game and timely action. They were impressive not only in the offence but also in the defence that denied many efforts and played a vital role to make the victory one-sided.
Guyana’s strikers opened up the first half at a high note and accomplished back-to-back attacks against Bermuda. Though the defending women from Bermuda showed resistance in the start, they could not maintain their status and conceded six goals in the 70
minutes of play.
In result of their fast game, the Bermuda team committed a mistake and awarded Guyana a penalty stroke in the 13th minute of the match. Chantelle Fernandes not only brilliantly converted the stroke but also boosted the morale of her team-mates.
In a matter of eight minutes, the Guyana line-up created a short corner and tested Dominique De Groot. She was at her best and did not miss a chance to double the tally. Her powerful drag-flick could not be saved by Latonia Fray. In the very next minute,
Bermuda made another mistake and awarded a second penalty stroke to Guyana. Marzana Fiedtkou took the opportunity and marked a reverse shot to expand the lead up to three goals. The resilient defence from Guyana kept Bermuda at bay during the first 35 minutes
of the match and concluded the opening period at 3-0.
Fernandes, Gabriela Xavier and Leigh Sandison scored one goal each and sealed the commanding six goals win for Guyana. This victory increases the chances for Guyana to move into the title-claiming fights.
