  1. My dad drives in his slippers :)

  2. i drive barefoot as long as it isnt deathly cold outside... i find it more comfortable... as for the illegality... i dont know if its illegal but it is surely frowned upon by police officers if they pull you over and you are barefoot

  3. Let me know when you will drive like this and i have my friend to pull you over and let you step out on your vehicle.

  4. Yeah. I tend to think it is pretty comfy to kick my shoes off while on the road, especially for long road trips.

It's probably a good idea to keep sandals close by if you do that though, just incase a trooper-duper pulls you over.

  5. I don't. I don't like driving with sandals either b/c i sit there adjusting the shoe and it makes it harder to drive

  6. yes i do

  7. I don't drive but I go barefoot always and everywhere, and I do know that in spite of persistent myths in the US, there are NO laws against driving barefoot in ANY state. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.

Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.

Of course you should also think of what you are used to; personally I haven't worn footwear for eleven years. Driving with any kind of shoe would feel like handling the steering wheel with boxing gloves, a pebble won't faze me and I wouldn't worry about having to walk if my car breaks down. On the other extreme end I have a friend who can't walk comfortably barefoot on indoor tile, he'd probably pull back if there was even the smallest pebble, caked mud or other irregularity on the brake pedal, and he'd never be able to walk home if he didn't have shoes. Use a bit of common sense in addition to what the laws and the experts say, anything that's totally opposite from everything you're used to is likely to be a distraction and make you clumsy with your feet.

  8. Yes.  Without shoes I find I am in better touch with what I am doing with the pedals.

I can feel (even grip) the pedals making sure the foot is in position such that there is no chance of my foot slipping off the pedal; drive more sensitively and hence more ecomonically and carefully; be more aware if there is a stray item floating around near the pedals and then be able to deal with it effectively and quickly. In wet weather I will be more aware if the soles of my feet are wet when getting in the car and hence ensure they are dry before driving, than if I was wearing shoes which tend to make one oblivious to whatever is beneath them.

As for braking, modern brakes give no problem doing this very quickly and hard and, again, gives greater control and less chance of slipping at the vital moment.

I believe it is dangerous, for the above reasons, to drive in shoes due to the increased chance of slipping as opposed to bare feet.

I am unaware of anywhere in the world where it is illegal to drive barefoot & why should it be? - any such law would be contrary to public safety as this would, for example, suggest driving in flip-flops or high heels (which are particularly dangerous) should be left on by preference.  Most of  the laws/guidance that I have viewed tend to specifically warn against inappropriate footwear and do not suggest that bare feet are inappropriate.  In this context may I suggest referring to the attached web page wherein there is a useful information on this subject.

Unfortunately, there is a common obsession amongst most western societies towards wearing shoes (I guess largely consumer driven and outdated views relating to poverty or political leanings) to the extent that common sense has been suppressed in favour of conventionality.  Shoes are generally not necessary and tend to be responsible for more harm than good.

  9. Every state I have lived in that is illegal so I haven't tried.

  10. its illegal here in pa.

  11. I like to drive with my shoes on thanks.

  12. I find it silly how people believe this urban legend. This myth has been on all the "mythbusting" TV shows. The American Automobile Association even says it's safer to drive barefoot than with backless shoes, high heels, or any shoes that might be slippery on the pedal.

Still, there are numerous sources online to verify this "law" is a myth. All it takes is a Yahoo search and tons of verified information pops up.

  13. I do yeah. Anytime I don't need to have my shoes on, I drive barefoot.
