Question:

Guys lets talk boxing again?

When I first came to this site a short time ago I was happy to see knowledgable fight fans who knew something about history and could offer interesting discussions about boxing today and in the past and even the future of the sport.

Sadly I am now considering leaving this site. I hope I can see reason to stay.

Since this fight between Hopkins and Calzaghe, all I see is one other avenue of society that has been gobbled up by the ugly spectre of racism. I watched Joe THE BOXER win a contest against Bernard THE BOXER, not white vs black.

Yet, all I see from both sides, black and white, US and UK, is a bunch of high school banter that seems to have no end. I guess all I can hope for is a few months to pass and for all the hoopla to die down.

I miss reading the input from guys like Woody, Untouchable, Toughguy and Elmer fu. These guys know what they're talking about and I would like to take the time to thank each of you. For the rest, let's get back to boxing.

  1. i ear what your saying i also don't like the racist part of it, but! Hopkins is the one who dug this one up again! i personally ain't at all racist. but i am English so obviously i would want the English boxer to win, that's only human! unless the English boxer was not a nice guy like Tyson then only in that circumstance would i want the other guy to win!. my favorite boxer was evander holyfield so dont matter who he fights i would want him to win.

  2. First of all thanks for the nice things you have said about me and some of the other guys on here including yourself who I have the upmost respect for.  Yes I noticed exactly what you are referring to as far as the racist remarks and childish bantering on here regarding the Calzaghe vs Hopkins fight.  To me, it was just a good and long awaited fight and should be treated no differently than that.  I will continue to try to contribute the best that I can to this site and hopefully see you and the other guys such as yourself on here that know what they are talking about with regards to boxing.  Thank you for bringing this up because it sure needed to be.

  3. Galactus - you kind of threw me with this question. First of all, the racist stuff is inappropriate. But I do think it's being brought up due to Hopkins's statement about not being beat by a white boy. (Although i haven't heard it, I've read that he used that phrase) That comment by Hopkins brought race into the fight! I don't think that was a wise statement on his part and as a white man, I'm personally not offended, but others may have been.

Second point: I totally agree and I'm a bit shocked at the anti-American stuff thats been brought up here. It was one fighter vs another. Wouldn't it be great if people just looked at it that way. I know that when i watch the olympics, I root for my country first! The US, if we don't have a chance I tend to root for our older brothers the Brits, mostly because they are our closest ally. The Australians are right there as well. I do root for a nationality but not a race. I accept one but not the other.

And on one last minor note: Woody, toughguy, Elmer fu are very respected participants on this forum. Untouchable's account was terminated for attacking other participants that didn't agree with him (especially blogbaba) His answers & questions were laced with anti American and racist remarks. Thats why he's no longer here, at least under that name. He was also the same guy known as the hebrew mauler, that attacked Santana D constantly.

I hope you stick around! Don't let the overzealous nationalist or racist get to you! Your opinions and mine are usually on the same page, but you are a much better writer!!! I enjoy the way you state your opinion and back it up with intelligent fact! Even on the occasion I don't agree with you, I can appreciate why you think the way you think, because of the way you write it and break it down!

    Think about it.

  4. so you say but I bet you saw yank v limey?

and yeah its a shame they dont frequent as much no doubt due to the krap that is spouted daily on this forum..

but even some of them regulars were not withought bias..all the same it would be good to see them all back and to ignore the idiots

  5. You are making me all weepy.

  6. Once again you are 100 % correct.--- Calzaghe won the fight, not because of race or nationality, but because he was a better Boxer than Hopkins was last night.--Anyone who believes otherwise.......knows nothing about Boxing.

  7. I dunno, I sorta enjoy when boxing ventures A BIT into political and social issues, it can reflect a slice of our culture and cultures from around the world, and whether or not this stuff makes sense, it's very interesting when serious folks discuss subjects in a serious manner.  As for the annoying stuff, just ignore and move along...it'll go away if you pay it no mind.

Ultimately, in the ring, all those issues wash away as it boils down to 4 fists on 2 men in the ring.  But the run-up to any fight reveals a broad spectrum of issues, it's not just boxing anymore, it's a study of humanity, warts and all.  The run up to Calz-Hop was a tea-party in comparison to the run up to Holmes-Cooney...so isn't that a measuring stick for where we've been and how far we've come?

  8. Sadly there are still a lot of ignorant people out there. What i saw was not a battle between a black man and a white man or an American against a British or any other bullshit. All i saw was the undefeated super middleweight champion of the world challenging the number one light heavyweight. Why cant everybody see it like that. basically its just ignorance.
