I usually wear a plain black or blue one becuase I haven't found a pattern that I really like in a while.

Guys who swim laps prefer to wear a speedo.  In any case, an answer to the real question, either plain or patterned is nice.  It is hard to find patterned colors so I usually wear a blue or black speedo.
