Why cant you eat certain game certain times of the year? Isn't the meat the same always? How could flesh change? I always thought you couldnt hunt for certain game during certain seasons because of their mating patterns. What's the deal? My Boxer caught a rabbit in the back yard and i was gonna boil it for her and my husband had a heart attack bc he said she couldnt eat it right now! I was just trying to give her a little treat...h**l, she caught it. Im sure she feels she deserves it. LOL

  1. OK lets think here for a minute.  A wolf does not cook it's food, and they eat rabbit during the summer, spring and winter.  If your dog has had all of its shots...then it will be alright.  We have certain seasons here also, but I never knew it was due to parasites..mmm and I am not a young one here.  I think in my state it is due to mating seasons...and then comes hunting season...and wabbit is so tasty...just ask Elmer Fud...he will tell you.  But, my dogs have eaten many rabbits...all raw..and none have ever gotten sick from it.  But, the reason your husband freaked out is because it was not your hunting season yet..and if a DNR officer came along and caught you....it is called a fine...and a few hundred bucks to boot.  So that is the only reason I would of said not cook it....oh yeah also you have to have a license for hunting to...you just can't keep it even during season if you are not legal.  If you have not read about the BARF diet for dogs you should...it is a new wave of feeding them...it is a raw diet..and good for them.

  2. I was always told about eating rabbit in BER months

September, October, November, December, but Jan and Feb are OK if it's cold.

This has something else to do with it. Seasonal animal feeding habits and taste. Leading up to the breeding season the animals are in the prime of life and have been eating well all Spring, Summer and Fall; healthy and taste good. Once harsh winter has set in (Northern US) the food sources dry up. The animals go into survival feeding. Deer eat lots of cedar and barks anything they can find to survive. I know a guy who butchered a Whitetail deer injured in a car accident in late March. Winter was still in full swing. The meat that he gave me tasted terrible, I could almost taste Cedar.

So, depending where you are the taste is important.
