  1. Being called ma'am is respectful. You should actually be pleased men/boys are saying "ma'am" and not "Hey you!"

I know it's hard to get used to when you're young, but it is meant to be respectful.

  2. Ma'am has nothing to do with age. I expect to be called ma'am and I'm only 23. It's respectful.

  3. anyone over the age of 45

My mom gets pretty mad when someone calls her ma'am

She thinks it makes her sound old

  4. I'd lived all over the US but now I am living in the south. Even 2 year old girls get called ma'am and little boys get called sir. In fact if you don't call your teacher sir or ma'am in school you would get reprimanded. When I lived on the west coast it was an insult to be called ma'am so I can see where you are coming from. Depending on who called you that and where they are, I can almost bet they weren't calling you an old maid.

  5. I can't imagine anyone calling a girl/woman ma'am because they thought she was old or ugly, so just put that thought out of your mind. Like MotherMay, I'm from the south and anyone that has been here for any length of time knows that ma'am is a respectful term we call our females. ALL females. Ma'am and Sir are taught to our children just like anyone, anywhere would teach "please" and "thank you" or "excuse me". It's good manners.

  6. That does makes sense.
