or how could it be worded better , should I change the friend part? even though we are more then friends i appreciate the friendship he gives me too. guys would you like to get this message from your girl?

sounds great, maybe not the friend bit, maybe something more neutral like 'man' or 'guy'

If I got that message, I'd take it to mean you like me as a friend only.  Instead of "thanks for being such a great friend to me," just say "i think you're awesome" or something like that.  When a girl uses the word "friend" with me, I take it to be a kiss of death.

The only tricky part in that would be the "friend" part. Maybe, thanks for being such a great boyfriend( if that's the case) and friend to me when i need you. or something like that.
