Question:

Gym membership - not notified of charges when agreed to changes, email after informing of addtl $300 due?

I joined a gym less than a month ago and am paying a decent amt per month ($130)...I wanted to change the membership so I could go to any of their gyms, which was an increase to $180/month. I asked the sales girl if there were any charges that would be incurred and she said no...that the next time my payment was due, I would just be charged the $180. About a week later, I received an email from her informing me that she 'forgot' about the additional initiation charge due - another $300!! Am I legally bound to pay this? Or is there any chance that I can get the $180 membership w/o paying the addtl $300 since I wasn't informed at the time the agreement was made?

Any help is appreciated - I hate that gyms are always seemingly scamming people.

Thanks!

  1. I don't know legally, but fight it tooth and nail. Demand they waive the $300. Most companies would rather keep you happy then crazy mad!

Besides, what is the worst that could happen, you keep your current membership.

  2. In the US--If you have the email, you can probably go back to your previous arrangement, but you won't be able to get the new contract without the initiation fee.

I really wonder where you live.  $130 was already an outrageous amount!
