  1. there are about 600,000 in spain -- about 1/2 in andalusia.  about 1/4 of the population of gitanos are incarcerated so the statistics keeping gets kind of sticky.

  2. There are gypsies in most of the regions of Spain.

The most famous are those living in a neighbourhood in Granada called El Albaicin. In El Albaicin some live in an area of transformed caves, which are now a tourist attraction.

Other cities with large gypsy populations are Madrid, Barcelona (where the rumba catalana flamenco was created), Seville, Malaga (La Palma & Palmilla neighbourhoods), Jerez de la Frontera, etc.

Many gypsies still like to live a semi-nomadic life. Some of these  work as"feriantes" (with fair or carnaval attractions they can travel all over the country). Many others do the outdoor markets that are held in different locations or towns each day.

Some are still living in poverty in hovels on the outskirts of the larger citiies. But others are succesful and famous musicians (especially in flamenco).

And one of the most well known is a politician: Juan de Dios Heredia, who as a member of the spanish parliament has helped improve the conditions for his people.

  3. I wish I could be a gypsi, i think they are free...
