Gypsy Robin left it late to win the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park on 5 September
The 2-year-old Wesley Ward conditioned filly, Gypsy Robin, held off Say a Novena to land the all important $101,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park on 5 September, 2011.
The daughter of Daaher, out of Fiesty Princess by Indian Charlie, Gypsy Robin broke her maiden in her first attempt at Keeneland under jockey Jeffrey Sanchez.
It was a 4 ½ furlong dash on 22 April, 2011 and the fast filly completed the distance in 50.34 seconds, downing Painted Woman and Dorothy’s Aurora on the way, who finished second and third respectively.
Since then, victory has eluded the filly until she was sent to Monmouth Park to run in the Sorority Stakes under her regular jockey Jeffrey Sanchez.
Sanchez guided the filly skillfully in the beginning after a good break, and took the lead from the long shot sprinter Vukovar after passing the quarter pole.
Say a Novena on the other hand was determined to be in the front as she came back from behind to split both her rivals Gypsy Robin and Vukovar, and it looked apparent that the filly will go on to beat the field in the end.
The Colleen Stakes winner, Say a Novena, had the best momentum as she cruised past everyone to see the wire clearly, but Gypsy Robin wasn’t to be intimidated by the pacey filly and decided to match the speed.
Sanchez after the race said, that he wanted to pull back the filly, but she has too much speed on her and entering into the stretch Gypsy Robin came to her own as she held off everyone.
Gypsy Robin went on to hit the wire in front of the front running Say a Novena, and she covered the six furlong time in 1 minute and 10.98 seconds.
The highly favoured filly, Select Cat who was sent at 2 to 1 odds was no match for Gypsy Robin and Say a Novena, as she finished third.
Vukovar who set the pace in the early part of the race, went on to finish last, Colormesaichi finished fourth and Claresmiezie went on to finish fifth to complete the order of finishes.
