Question:

H-D re-mapping after upgrades?

I added stage 1 air cleaner and d&d slip ons to my 09 Nightster 1200. I'm going to get it remapped this week.

Will it hurt anything just cruising around town without it being remapped? It seems to run fine.

  1. The only place I would run it is to the remap guy. You're getting close to melt down time.

  2. As already noted, installing the bigger air intake adds more air to the mix, causing it to run leaner, adding the high flow slip ons also causes it to run leaner yet. Running it  at high speed, or for very long can overheat the motor and or burn a valve etc. Having said that, the ecm is supposed to allow approx. 20% of adjustment on it's own, to allow for riding at different altitudes. That's the claim, my experience is that it allows around 10% difference. would I ride it if it was mine? around a couple of blocks yes, more than that, no. I'd wait for the remap

    ride safe

  3. With more air flowing through the engine it may run a lean air/fuel ratio. This may cause damage to the exhaust valves but probably won't for a short time riding. I would not risk it though.

  4. I have a 07 street glide did the same up grade's. Just got back from a 1500 mi trip loaded down with passenger & luggage. Up & down mountain's (out west) high temp's, high speed's, no loss of power, no backfiring (lean symptom)

That being said there's a chance it's running lean i'm going to pull a plug & check the color. (adj if ness)

So if you want to run it like that for a couple of day's i don't think it would hurt it IMO
