  1. they are great rifles and i dont know how much one is because my friend has one and the 308 win cartridge is sufficent for deer only out to about 200 yards sorry if you want a long medium and short range deer gun go with the rem 700p in 300 rem ultra mag and use power level 1 ammo for close range power level 2 for mid range or out to 300 yards and power level 3 which is good out to 500 yards

  2. yes they are good economical weapons to own.  the 308 catrridge is on par wiht the 30-06 round. and  you dont have to purchase a different weaopn when you want to fire a different round, you simply purchase a barel in just about any caliber and you can snap it right on.

  3. The Handi-rifles  tend to have shorter barrels than the average gun.   The .308 may need something a little longer to get the most out of it.  I have one chambered in Ruger .204 and have been very happy with its performance.  I consistently make shots at 250 yards with it.

One in 308 will be a kicker, but they do come with good butt-pads.  You'll pay between 250 -350.

  4. My father bought one for my nephue in 243 and he said it is not the most accurate gun around.

  5. they are pretty good rifles, and fairly accurate, plenty accurate for average deer hunting.  They are lighter than a bolt gun and so will kick a little more.

If you can hit a deet at 350 with a boltgun you can do the same with a handi-rifle, but most people really shoot their deer at within 100 yards.  Also, most people are poor judges of distance unless they have a tape measure.

The handi-rifle will run about $250, but for about 50-100 more you can get a nice savage bolt gun in 30-06, 270, or 308

  6. A .308 would probably knock your block off.  H&Rs kick like mules.  But they are very accurate for what they are, 350 yards probably wouldn't be a problem with a good scope.  They run from around $220 to $270.

  7. H&R Handi rifles are excellent guns. They are a lot more accurate than I expected. They are a little picky when it comes to bullet weight. But once you found the correct bullet weight, H&R Handi rifles are capable of 1" or less 100 yard groups with good loads in most calibers. I will not hesitate shooting a target that's 350 yards away with a .308 handi rifle. Current prices for handi rifles are between $235 to around $400 depending on the model and they are worth every penny.

  8. I think that if you buy one that you will really like it. I work with a youth hunting and fishing club and handi rifles and ultra rifles are about all that we use. Very accurate gun for the price, I see them in Houston with a scope for a about $270.

I have one in 30/30 that I just love.

As for recoil, CTO put a 15 oz mercery cylinder in a 25/06 and none of the youth that I have seen shoot it have even said anything about recoil, so there are ways around that too.

  9. Jonah,

I'd not shoot at a deer at 350 yards with any rifle, my personal range limitation is 200 yards.  With a properly sighted Handi-Rifle, I'd not hesitate to make a shot at that range, and if I were content to make 350 yard shots, I'd use it.

Several of my friends have Handi-Rifles.  One has a Handi-Rifle in .30-30 WCF with a 20 gauge barrel that is affectionately called "Old Scrap iron."  He uses it as his rainy day rifle and uses it as an iron sight rifle only.  Last time I heard the tally, "Old Scrap Iron" had accounted for over a dozen deer, several coyote, and several limits of dove.

Another friend has a Handi-Rifle and half a dozen barrels in half a dozen different calibers and gauges.

He has taken all manner of game from quail and turkey to coyotes, squirrels, and deer with different barrels, and he keeps the .357 Magnum barrel for use as his Truck Gun.

I believe that you can get a Handi-Rifle for somewhere in the neighborhood of $250.00.  That puts it in "Best Buy" country IMO.  Another good thing about single-shot rifles is that it teaches people to make their first shot count, and it encourages hunters to stalk as close as possible, and then crawl 50 yards closer to make sure their first shot is all that is needed.
