  1. You might not be so aware that there is over-fishing supply in most oceans. This has led to restrictions in fishing in order for the resource to grow back.

This is just an example of a renewable resource exploited in a non sustainable way.

AN EXAMPLE OF A TIME WITHOUT ENVIRONMENTAL NGO´s:  Scotland

Why? Because Scotland has been entirely deforested for the British navy and at the time nobody paid attention to these issues... and since then Scotland has virtually no forests.

  2. Environmentalists in New Zealand have put sanctions in certain areas so that fish popullations can grow again, this has been in place for over 10years in some of these areas and fish populations have grown tremendously. Area sizes are roughly about 200kms long by 200kms from shore so are significantly huge areas. You can fish in some of these areas now but it is only a certain time and length of period, if you are found in these areas outside of the allocated fish period you are fined quite high and your boat or car and equipment is confiscated. This was agreed to by the local indigenous tribes firstly as a way to sustain the ecosystem for tommorrows generations.

  3. I think I read they're allowing some sea lions to be killed up in the Pacific Northwest who are hogging too many of the salmon trying to make their way upstream to spawn.

  4. Fish hatcheries mostly stock for the rod rather than enhancing fish populations. Some environmentalist groups (actually, more accurately described as environmentally-minded people rather than "environmentalist") have worked to get old dams removed to allow fish migration and to clean up the streams and ponds in my area. What have you done to help native fish populations?

  5. Actually, there are fewer fish in all the rivers because of people spraying fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides on their lawns, because people leave cars leaking oil on driveways and the oil washes into streams and rivers, because deforestation leads to buildup of silt through increased erosion and the loss of canopy cover leading to increased stream temperature which decreases oxygen concentration, and because dams block fish access to spawning grounds and reduce streamflows required for flushing streams and moving anadromous fry to the ocean.

But I suppose if you don't understand these points, environmentalist groups make a convenient target so you don't have to modify any of your behavior to help the fish.
