Question:

HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT PUBLIC AID AND UNEMPLOYMENT?

have been with my current employer for almost 4 years. I am a hard working, dedicated employee with no past preformance problems. I made a mistake with my bank (I am responsible for $28,500) and it caused the company to loose $5010.68. I am being told as we speak if they cannot find the error, they will just assume that I took the money and I will loose my job.

I have never, EVER stolen anything in my life! And I have been nothing but dedicated to this company. I asked if I could keep my job and just replace the money and they said no. I have a 1 year old son and my son's father was laid off from his job last month. He currently only receives $188 every 2 weeks for unemployment. So I am basically the only real provider at the moment. If I loose my job I will loose my apartment, my car and not have any money to feed my family! So, on to my questions:

Given the situation at hand, if I get fired, do you think I will be able to collect unemployment until I can find a new job? Also, would I qualify for any sort of public assistance while on unemployment such as medical coverage for my son and possibly food stamps? Also, my son's father and I live together and he gives me every last dime he has so he is contributing as much as he can at the moment so I am afraid if I go to public aid, since we are not legally married yet, they may go after him for money or child support. Any information you can give me would be helpful. Thank you!!!

AND I AM NOT TRYING TO BE LAZY AND SIT AROUND AND JUST COLLECT AND MOOCH OFF OF THE GOVERNMENT EITHER. I AM SIMPLY MAKING SURE MY FAMILY CAN SURVIVE WHILE ME AND MY SON'S FATHER FIND WORK.

  1. Talk to your employer. Tell them they can have full access to looking at your bank records and your boyfriends. You will take a lie detector test anything to prove you are innocent. You don't need this type of thing on your record of employment.

If you are fired for stealing I don't think you qualify for unemployment. They can protest it and not pay.

  2. Yes, you can collect unemployment if you get fired only. This may be different if they can Prove you stole the money.  Don't quit.  AS far as food stamps, you can get food stamps whether you get fired or not.  They will take into account the total household income and the number of people living in the house.  Your son's father will have to be the primary on the food stamp application since he will be the one with the income.  He makes $376 a month and therefore for a household of 3 you should get around $300+ in food stamps.  The kid should qualify for medical.  You might can get utilities and/or cash assistance also.  You can do the application online in most states, then you'll get something in the mail and you just go over there a few days later when you get a letter from them telling you what you need to bring.  It takes only a few days to get the food stamps, so fill out the application right away if you get fired.

I'm sure you're not from PA. but its mostly the same for most states.  Take this anonymous test (you don't have to put your name in it)  and this will tell you what you qualify for.  Just click SCREEN FOR BENIFITS, and enter all your income information in.  It only takes a few minutes and it should tell you what you'll get.  Fill it out like you've been fired and see.  As soon as you get done, the system will tell you what you qualify for.

  3. I am not sure.  I know they have a state program for children and mothers and you'll probably get that, but I think they would go after your boyfriend for support.  It's a bad situation.  You may have to say he abandoned you, which just sets up lies.  I don't think you can collect unemployment AND state aid.  When the unemployment runs out you can get it though.

Sorry about your job.  Stinks how easily they can kick you to the curb, isn't it?

  4. you should apply for both unemployment and any and all assistance you can get to help your family out. Hopefully they will find the error and everything will be ok though , best of luck to you. it does not matter if you are married , they will jsut ask if the father is in the home and helpin , you just say yes and give them his income information too. it will be ok.

  5. If you are fired, especially for alleged embezzlement, you cannot get unemployment.

You may qualify for assistance, depending on your assets.  Contact the social service agency in your state.
