HBL wins Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after 33 yearsAn exciting final between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-International-Airlines-c831 (PIA) ended yesterday with HBL winning the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy played at National Stadium Karachi in Pakistan.HBL required 134 runs on the final day of play and the team had seven wickets remaining. Much hopes relied on HBL’s opener Aftab Alam who was unbeaten on 63 at close of the fourth day’s play.Alam didn’t disappoint his team as he converted his start to a century on the final day. He got good support from Fahad Masood as he scored 42 good runs before getting out. He was unfortunate though as he ran himself out trying to take a quick single. He drove the ball at mid-off and ran to the danger-end. The ball was hit directly at the stumps by Anwar Ali and Fahad was well short of his crease.Fahad’s wicket gave some hope to the PIA team as HBL were 146 for 4 at that stage. The lower-middle order had collapsed in the first innings and a same situation would have had HBL in trouble. However, the captain of the HBL team Hasan Raza made sure that the team doesn’t repeat the first innings collapse and his run-a-ball 54 runs sealed a victory for his team. The main-stay for HBL was Alam who held his nerves and didn’t bother even when three quick wickets fell in the second innings. Alam amassed 106 runs before he was out. He would have liked to stay until the end but he was cleaned-up just 19 runs behind the total. His effort was enough for his team though as he was named as the player-of-the-match. He was out for a duck in his first innings but didn’t waste the opportunity for the second time in the match. The captain of the PIA team Kamran Sajid took two wickets in the second innings and was one of the best players in the match. He scored 90 and 70 in both his innings and took four wickets in the match overall.Kamran’s efforts went in vain though as the other team members failed to support him. The biggest disappointment for PIA was a dismal show by star Pakistani batsman Shoaib Malik. He failed to score much runs in the match and was below par. This match was very important in the context that it was the first ever day/night first-class encounter in history of cricket and it seems to be a success.
