HBO Sports President holds onto Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao
HBO vows they won’t give up on the biggest fight of all time.
In an exclusive interview with http://boxing.fanhouse.com, HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg suggested that though many have lost faith in a bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, he remains optimistic it will pan out in the future.
Greenburg was quick to admit a number of obstacles were currently hindering the bout, but said: “if we can clear those hurdles, then, I'm pretty optimistic about that fight happening if we get a shot at making it again. I have to be optimistic.”
He continued: “We were just on the cusp of taking this sport back to the level that we reached in the 1980s, and they [the promoters] pulled the rug out from under us. As a result, you know, the other fights that came along felt smaller.”
Though a potential fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. would set new profit records for professional boxing, dismal setback after dismal setback have soured many into thinking it will never happen at all.
A second round of negotiations between Pacquiao-Mayweather had Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, give Mayweather a deadline on which to respond to an original offer, but “Money” refused to play ball.
More recently the undefeated fighter was involved in an incident with former girlfriend Josie Harris that awaits a court date. Mayweather was charged for grand larceny and battery after allegedly breaking into Harris’s home and attacking her in front of their children.
According to Proboxingfans.com, Mayweather faces a maximum 34 years in prison if convicted for all of his charges, making a fight with Pacquiao a sad pipe dream.
Despite his troubles, Greenburg remains optimistic Mayweather will return to the ring. “I do believe that if Floyd can clear up his situation in Las Vegas, then, yes, I do believe that we would see Floyd Mayweather back in the ring again. And the only logical fight for Floyd Mayweather is Manny Pacquiao — that is, if he’s still standing.”
