  1. 480i with a regular DVD player, 480p with progressive scan (and component video cables)

with a $60 DVD player from Philips, you can get it upscaled to 1080p

the blu-ray or hd dvd player should say what it upscales to

    a PS3 (blu-ray) also supposedly upscales to 1080p

  2. As long as you are hooking up by HDMI, you should be able to output to any resolution the player is capable of.

BUT, it does not mean that DVD will look like an HD-DVD or Blu-ray.  It's simply being upconverted to another resolution.

To put it in perspective, every DVD ever created has it's information created on the disk as 480i, the lowest form of resolution.  So as soon as you output that at a higher resolution, you are now relying on the HD-DVD or Blu-ray's electronics to do the de-interlacing/scaling.  Some players allow for the ability to output DVD's in its native 480i output, and your TV can then scale to it's own resolution.  Sometimes this gives better results than upscaling to another resolution (example the PS3 is one of the worst for upscaling, check out the link)

  3. it can be upscaled to 1080i. but remember this is a stretched and filled in image and not the full image of a hd-dvd or blu-ray. these hi-def formats are already 1080 native and will always be superior to a filtered 480p image.
