Is there a difference in the quality of picture? I know there is a big difference in price though with the Upconversion much cheaper.

  1. There is a difference in quality.  The upconversion just takes a standard DVD and converts it to a higher resolution.  There is an improvement, or so I've heard, but you're starting with a standard DVD.  The information isn't there to begin with and there's not much you can do to truly improve the quality.

A hd DVD player (blue ray since the actual HD is no longer made) can play a high def, blue ray disc.  The information is there for display and it's much better.
