so i have a Sony DVP-NS70H dvd player, it says high definition on it, but it doesn't say anything about HD-DVD. it does also say that it can play video up to a 1080i resolution. i know HD-DVDs can't be played on a normal dvd player, but i don't want to buy an HD-DVD and waste the money just to try it out. does anyone know if this model plays it or not?

  1. No.

  2. It won't play an HD DVD disk unless it is a hybrid disk with HD DVD on one side and DVD on the other side. Sony is in competition with Toshiba's HD DVD format (actually the competition is over, Blu-Ray won. After Warner announced for Blu-Ray HD DVD movie sales went down to 15% of the High Def movie sales and Blu-Ray 85%)

Your Sony won't play Blu-Ray either. It only upconverts, or more properly upscales, DVD to 1080i resolution.

  3. Sony makes Blu-Ray, so it wouldn't play HD DVDs regardless, but that model does not play Blu Ray either.  It is upgrading the picture by using a progressive scan, so it has a better picture than any off the shelf, Dora the Explorer DVD player.
