HD TV & Blu-ray Player - Normal DVDs or worth buying Blu ray?

Question

Just wondering is it actually worth buying the Blu-ray DVDs instead of normal ones, I would buy blu rays if the quality would be a lot better.

I have a Samsung HD 32" telly about 5000.1 not full hd with a brightness level of 550 cd/m2

with a PS3 blu ray player.

If you already have a PS3 the best way to judge is to try for yourself. You won't get as big an improvement as on a 1080p HDTV, but there will be some (but impressions vary with different individuals).

The difference is not just resolution ... but superior audio (if you have a good surround system) and broader colour range due to a superior colour space.

Just keep in mind the price is higher than for DVDs so compare to a DVD of (preferably) the same movie on DVD (The PS3 will upconvert the DVD as well).

Blu-Ray is HD where as normal DVDs are not.

if the film is modern it has likely been shot with cameras that can handle HD, so if the film contains a lot of detail then I would say yes,

If the film is old or it is basically a talking type film with no stunning cinematography then stick to normal dvd

This is a bit of a mine field as there are so many if's or but's to do with your home cinema system that we don't know. The quality should be amazing if you TV has higher contrast ratio (15000-1),connected by HDMI leads and of course the quality of the player and film. It doesn't necessarily mean if the film is old it will not look good, if it has been filmed in 70mm i.e Spartacus,Gone with the wind,The wizard of Oz etc these films would have had the highest production and mastering transfers to DVD available. Be careful of 1 thing though don't go down the HD dvd route, stick to Blue-ray as it has just been announced that HD dvd discs will no longer be produced and that the format is now defunct.  Hope this has helped.
