Question:

HD tv problems?

Hi all,

I set my ps3 up to the tv through the composite and played a bluray disc. The tv says that it plays at 480i SD and when I'm looking at my dvd recorder on component it says 580i SD.

Blu rays are supposed to be 1080p hd resolution so how come I'm not getting anywhere near that?

And the dvd recorder seems to give me a really bad quality picture and recording. I know that it will only record analogue quality but it seems poorer than what I used to get.

Any thoughts? What can I do to change this?

  1. You can only view 1080p content through an HDMI connection.  Composite cables cannot transmit enough data to yeild 1080p images.  You cannot record anything more than Standard Definition on a DVD recorder.  Make sure everything is optimal and securely in place.

  2. Well you SAY you have your Blu Ray set up using the COMPOSITE (3 wire) cable....That is a LOW DEF input on your TV set....

And you also state your RECORDER gives you 580i.....but it's also a COMPONENT (5 wire) cable .....

Well.....LOOK at the COMPONENT connector on the back of your TV set....

Some component connectors will only do 480 and 580 and NOT 1080 !  And it generally is listed on the connector, OR the front of the TV set will have the LOGO  [[  HD  ]] on the front telling you it is an HD TV.....

It's important to understand that the COMPONENT connectors from 1998 to 2001 were actually LOW DEF connections and they could not pass the 1080 HD signal....

And some Component inputs ONLY DID 580 and not 1080 !

So LOOK carefully at the back of your TV set !

Because the NEXT GENERATION of TVs had Low Def Component   <<AND>> High Def COMPONENT connectors on them !!

And I hope you have that !  Because YOU WANT to find a set of 1080 COMPONENT connections CLEARLY LABLED 480/580/1080 on the back of the TV set....

Of course, those were built from 2001  to about 2005......

And from 2005 to 2008....ALL component connections were 1080 !

You want details on your TV set?  Get out your owner's manual, and look at the pictures in the CONNECTIONS page...it should give you a detailed description of what does what.....

Then you'll have more knowledge .....

  3. Hook it up with HDMI. You will only get 1080p through HDMI anyway. Also turn your PS3 on with out a disk in it. I think there video settings where you can change it to HD.

  4. Sounds like a tv issue. Is your TV itself capable of 1080P?

If not it will never work.
